Nathan J. Comp is a writer and content creator based in Madison, WI. He is a regular contributor to Isthmus, Madison’s alternative newsweekly, writing about politics, science, tech, people, and the strange. Many of his long-form features have been re-published on this site.

He also co-produces and co-writes the Philadephia, PA-based podcast The Vanished. The Vanished spotlights missing persons overlooked by mainstream media outlets.

At present, he is working on a book about the Nov. 8, 2004, disappearance of Amos Mortier. He also is writing and co-producing the feature documentary, What Happened to Amos?, with director, editor, and co-producer Kristina Motwani.

Nathan has written for In These Times, The Progressive, Off the Bus, Huffington Post, Living Without, in addition to numerous trade publications and newspapers.

The Feral Scribe launched as a travelogue in April 2010. As a seasonal proofreader for a Philadelphia-based hedge-fund company, Nathan traveled America during the off-season, writing about the places he visited and the people he met. During the summer of 2010, he traveled with a small, family-owned carnival. In 2011, he jumped on the tail end of PHISH tour before traveling around the Dakotas.

In 2012, he moved to northern New Mexico, quickly establishing himself as an adept and aggressive reporter for The Rio Grande SUN, covering crime, courts, and county politics. The SUN is among the last papers in America devoted almost exclusively to investigative reporting. During his time with The SUN Nathan uncovered several scandals and instances of corruption in Rio Arriba County. In his free time, he wrote for this site, covering the annual Catholic pilgrimage to the Santuario de Chimayo, the region’s lowrider culture, and a 500-year-old tradition of placing descansos in honor of loved ones who died unexpectedly.

In 2013, he left New Mexico for the oil fields of North Dakota, where he and his ace managed a 52-room low-budget motel that was home to those at the bottom rungs of social ladder.

The Feral Scribe began a long-term re-design in November 2016, marking Nathan’s return to the site following a three-year hiatus. The site is now open to other writers.

The Feral Scribe has featured two guest writers in its six-year history.
